Rails to Trails: Story of an American Treasure, film and Q&A with Author/Producer
Monday, January 26, 2026, 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM
If you’ve ever been on the W&OD trail you’ve enjoyed the result of the Rails to Trails movement. Join us for a film screening of a new PBS documentary featuring a Q&A with Peter Harnik, author and executive producer.
Edward Norton narrates the story of one of the most unlikely social movements in American history: the struggle to convert thousands of miles of abandoned railroads into trails for cycling and walking. Facing fierce opposition and legal challenges from private property owners, leaders fought to reclaim these corridors for the public, creating a national network of scenic, car-free paths.
Peter Harnik was co-founder of the Rails to Trails Conservancy. Following that he founded the Center for City Park Excellence at the Trust for Public Land, which he directed until his retirement in 2016. He is the author of Urban Green, Inside City Parks, and From Rails to Trails: The Making of America’s Active Transportation Record.
