In Case You Missed It

Encore Learning Presents cosponsored with Arlington Public Library are being presented virtually on Zoom. This enables us to often record the presentation and share them on our YouTube channel. If you weren’t online on a recent Monday, you can view the presentations from the links below.

On September 27, 2021 Jim Kinter, Director of The Center for Ocean-Land Atmosphere Studies and Professor of Climate Dynamics at George Mason University, explained how global warming is now undeniable. The certainty has grown that human use of fossil fuel is primarily responsible for the changes as affirmed in the latest assessment report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Virginia is not exempt from the changes that the Earth will experience during the rest of this century; there will be a new normal, and we all need to prepare for it.

On September 13, 2021 Tom Manteuffel spoke on how cybersecurity has evolved largely into an active, ongoing, everyday conflict between nation-states that to date has stopped just short of acts of war. Yet most Americans are only dimly aware of its existence. Can an open society create and use cyberweapons in the absence of such awareness? And can the U.S. successfully counter non-democratic nation-states, such as Russia and China, which use such weapons to control their own people? Why was Stuxnet quite likely most important international event in the Obama administration?

On August 23, 2021 Jay Stanley focuses on how for 100 years the ACLU has been defending civil liberties principles. But what happens to individual liberties when the nation is faced with a pandemic, in which every person’s action can affect everyone else’s? His talk focused on how the ACLU navigated the pandemic and how it views the policy issues and conflicts that COVID-19 raised, with a special emphasis on privacy and technology issues.
