Horse Race Handicapping and Me, the Fruits of an Ill-Spent Youth!
Monday, April 27, 2026, 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Jeremy Baskin’s life changed when he was 18 and went to Delaware Park Racetrack. He became captivated by what appeared to be hieroglyphics in The Daily Racing Form that provided reams of information on the horses racing that day, including all their past performances – information that helps “handicap” a race to identify the horse most likely to win. About a year later, Penn National Race Course opened near his home and the romance was complete. He was hired as the Penn National Track Handicapper for TurfFlash, a service that provided selections to casual bettors who paid for his insights. His track winnings paid for his last year of law school, thereby convincing his mother that perhaps he had some facility at this game.
What are those commentators and pundits on the “big” races (Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes) talking about when they reference “cheap speed” or “middle moves” or “rising Beyers?” How influential are trainers (VERY influential) and jockeys (some, but less than you think)? Jeremy will also give an overview of how horse racing at different levels works, “conditions” of races that dictate their quality, how pari-mutual wagering works, and the influence of the internet over the entire industry.
He will end the session by handicapping the Kentucky Derby.
