Tour the New Deal Art of the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building

Tuesday, February 17, 2026, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

This tour is an opportunity to view the New Deal murals and sculptures of the 1930’s located within the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building. They celebrate the Social Security Act of 1935, the landmark legislation guaranteeing benefits to retirees, the unemployed and the disabled.  Scenes of American life and family are represented in murals by Seymour Fogel, Philip Guston, and Ben Shahn. There are also sculptural reliefs that are chemically bonded or carved into the walls and therefore difficult if not impossible to remove. This includes four large granite carvings on the exterior sides of the building that are visible from the street.

Completed in 1940, the building housed not only the Social Security Administration, but, for many years, the Voice of America. It is currently for sale and under threat of being demolished.
