In-person Tour of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial

Have you ever driven by the iconic George Washington Mason Temple in Alexandria and wondered what it is like inside? This is your opportunity find out. View the colossal statue of George Washington wearing his Masonic Regalia. Learn about George Washington becoming a charter Master of the Alexandria Masonic Lodge in 1788, a year before he was president.   Step into Memorial Hall and the adjacent Replica Lodge Room of Alexandria-Washington Lodge № 22 as it existed for more than 140 years, displaying original 1802 furniture, the famous William Joseph Williams portrait of Washington, the Capitol Cornerstone Trowel. See the large number of artifacts from Mount Vernon that were donated by Washington family descendants, including the 1792 Washington Family Bible. Step out onto the spectacular open-air observation deck near the 333 ft summit of the tower.

Consider joining us for an optional pay-for-your-own lunch in a nearby luncheon restaurant.

Registration is required: $15 (discounted) pre-payment is required to reserve a space for this event. Encore Learning membership must be valid through the event date to register. This event is limited to 25 registrants. Please review our Special Event Fees and Cancellation Policy prior to making your reservation. If the event is full you may choose to be added to the waitlist. You will be notified if space becomes available. As a courtesy, please let us know if you need to cancel your reservation as soon as possible, so someone on the waitlist may join the tour.

Reservations with payment will be accepted until Tuesday, 4/22.  Please email tour coordinator Tom Underwood at tomunderwoodtraveling@gmail.com  if you plan to join a casual lunch in Alexandria following the tour so that we can reserve appropriate table space.  

Directions:

 By car: on GPS, enter George Washington Masonic National Memorial, or 101 Callahan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22301. From southeast bound Rt 7 (King St), turn right into Masonic Temple Drive and follow signs to parking, which is ample and free. Walk to the visitors’ entrance on the northeast (shaded) side of the Memorial.

By Metro: take Blue or Yellow line train to King St – Old Town Station. Descend from the train platform, turn left and walk to King St, turn left under the raised railroad tracks and walk up to the Masonic Memorial. It is an uphill, 10-minute, 0.3 mile walk to the visitors’ entrance on the northeast (right hand) side of the Memorial.

Accessibility, Health and Safety Guidelines: The tour will begin on the 2nd floor, atop a flight of stairs.  An elevator is available for those who prefer to use it. The 4th floor requires mounting stairs to view some of the exhibits on that floor.

Arrival procedures: Please meet inside the visitors’ entrance on the first floor, next to the gift shop, at 11:20 AM.

Food: Following the tour, those who are interested may join an optional, pay-for-your-own lunch in Alexandria.  Email Tom Underwood at tomunderwoodtraveling@gmail.com if you wish to go for lunch after the tour.
