Walking Tour of the Historic Washington Navy Yard

Wednesday, May 14, 2025, 10:30 AM – 12 Noon.  Please arrive no later than 10:20 AM for entry procedures.

Join us for a fascinating walk around the U.S. Navy’s oldest active on-shore facility.  Established in 1799, it evolved from a shipbuilding center to an ordnance plant and then to the ceremonial and administrative center, hosting presidents, royalty, and other significant historical figures. The famous ironclad Monitor was repaired at the yard after her historic battle with CSS Virginia. The Lincoln assassination conspirators were brought to the yard following their capture. It is now home to the Chief of Naval Operations and headquarters of the Naval Historical Center and numerous naval commands. On the tour, you’ll see historic facilities and homes, and the Navy Museum, built in 1899 as a factory making naval guns.  See what those guns could do to the battleship armor of their day, from cannon balls embedded in Civil War iron plating to thick WWII armor pierced by a 16 inch shell. The tour will give you a strong sense of history, time, and place.

Registration is required. Membership must be valid through the event date to register. The venue and the tour are free. Group size is 25.

Notes to Registrants: The Navy Yard requests visitors’ names 3 weeks in advance. For that reason, Encore Learning registration for this event closes on Monday, April 21.  Important: on arrival, carry a driver’s license or other form of government issued identification.
