Spring 2026 Semester Updates

We need your class feedback!

We are receiving some wonderful feedback about our spring courses, but we need more participation. Your course evaluations help us so much in planning what works and what doesn’t for our members. Please do fill out those survey forms! An email with the survey link is sent to you on the last day of the class. You can also find the evaluation form on your course web page on our website.

The spring semester will wrap up with our last class on May 15. We have continued to offer classes in a variety of formats to include hybrid, virtual, in-person and recorded. Our goal is to make our Encore Learning courses accessible, convenient and enjoyable for all our valued members.

Don’t forget that thirteen courses are being recorded this term and will be available for registered participants to view online until July 31. Check out the list of recorded courses here.

So Many Classes to Enjoy!

Thank you to our Academic Programs Committee: Tom Adams, Jutta Bauman, Susan Bornstein, Mary Kay Davis, Peter French, Keith Klein, Jeanne LaBella, Catherine McCormick, Geerten Michielse, Ed Rader, Deb Spero and Wendy Swanson for all their hard work putting together a phenomenal selection of Spring courses! Here are just a few snapshots below:

Dawn Li, PhD, leads members in an exploration of how qi (life force energy), effortless flow, yin-yang balance and emptiness all shape creativity in the course Dao, Zen, and Creativity: East Asian Arts for Balance and Harmony.

On April 16, Brenda Cox, the church historian at LOMAX AME Zion Church; shared the history and pivotal role of Lomax AME Zion Church in Arlington’s Black community from its founding in the late 19th century to today. Members in the course Roots, Resistance, and Resilience: Black History & Community in Arlington learned about the church’s origins in Green Valley as a spiritual home for newly freed African-Americans, its leading role in Arlington civil rights activism and how the church nurtured leadership, education, and community.

Tessa Klein Harber leads a discussion in Creative Age: Classic vs. Contemporary Plays. Class members read, discuss and analyze one classic and one contemporary play, comparing how each reflects its time and society.

We are fortunate that dedicated improv teacher Steve Pilloff was available to repeat his popular course Never Too Old To Play, An Introduction to Improvisation (Improv). He is also teaching Never Too Old to Play Some More for those more experienced in improv, or those who took his intro course in the Fall. Members gather in a safe, encouraging and supportive environment to play and explore. You’ll be able to witness what they’ve learned at the annual meeting.

April is National Volunteer Month

Thank You Volunteers!

Thank you to some Wonderful Encore Learning Members!

If you are newly retired, retired but bored, or just searching for a reason to look forward to the day, volunteering might be a great avenue to explore.

Why Volunteer?

1. Make new friends and explore new activities that really interest you.

5. Pay your life skills forward or enjoy learning through a new experience.

6. So many other reasons… stay tuned!

Encore Learning can put your skills and energies to good use with your fellow members, and you can benefit at the same time.

Special Events

Late March and April have brought us varied and very interesting events and learning opportunities:

  • March 31 – We toured the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) headquarters with its newly restored rooms and the wonderful collection in the DAR museum.
  • April 21 – We visited the Inventors Hall of Fame in Alexandria. This interesting museum, in the Patent and Trade Office, celebrates over 600 inductees ranging from Abraham Lincoln, the only president to take out a patent, to Sara Blakely who invented Spandex.
  • April 27 – “Encore Learning Presents” our Monday Zoom program, featured Jeremy Baskin who developed a love of horserace handicapping while in law school. He shared his knowledge about the sport, the horses, and, of course, considerations in handicapping a race. He even handicapped the upcoming Kentucky Derby on May 2. You can access Jeremy’s recorded presentation including his Derby picks here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYV4CvHQA8U.
  • April 29 – Due to popular demand, we hosted our second tour this year of the Octagon House, the oldest private residence in Washington and the current home of the Architects Foundation.

Encore Learning members enjoyed wonderful tours of the DAR Headquarters (above); and the Inventors Hall of Fame (right).

For May, our special events team has uncovered more interesting experiences:

  • Monday, May 4, Rosenwald film screening at the Arlington Central Library (doors open 2:00 and the film will start at 2:30) This documentary is about Julius Rosenwald, early and successful president of Sears, Roebuck, who invested in giving African American children in the early 1900’s an education by building over 5,000 Rosenwald schools throughout the South including the original school in Arlington where the Langston school stands today. The filmmaker, Aviva Kempner, will attend and share insights into the making of the film and answer questions. Saundra Green, longtime Arlington resident who grew up in Hall’s Hill and attended Langston Elementary School, will also share her experiences and thoughts.
  • Thursday, May 7, Tour of the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream in the beautiful former Riggs Bank building. Our tour will highlight many versions of the American Dream and ways to achieve it.
  • Tuesday, May 12, Garden Tour at Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens featuring the spectacular gardens that captured the vision of Marjorie Merriweather Post when building the estate in the 1950s.
  • Monday, May 18, Encore Learning Presents a hybrid presentation by Jay Stanley of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), who will discuss privacy, surveillance technology and how police departments and federal agencies are seeking to use technology. In-person at GMU Arlington campus or online via Zoom.
  • Thursday May 21, we have a “double feature:
  • Our annual meeting at 10:30am in person at the Arlington Central Library – we will elect officers and conduct business but also have some fun. Some members of our Improvisation classes (Encore Learning Improvisers) will entertain us with their improv talents and the Heritage Harmonizers, an a cappella group featuring Encore Learning members, will provide a lively musical performance.
  • A group of us will attend the Nationals-Mets game at 4:05pm at Nat’s Stadium. We will bring them luck!

Kayak Club

The Kayak Club was able to resume activities this month on the Potomac River. We go out on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month, and although we did have a bit of rain, 4/22 turned out to be a good day on the river. The water was calm, the temperature was comfortable, and we saw lots of birds. As usual there were loads of cormorants, but we also saw quite a few Great Blue Herons, mallards, and even a wood duck.

Afterwards we had an enjoyable lunch at the Olive Garden. Hope to see more of you as the weather warms up. -Janice Yeadon and Diana Warmann – Kayak Club co-Coordinators. Photo from a previous Kayak Club season.

Craig will discuss the trip that he and his wife, Diana Warmann, took in June 2023 to Grand Teton National Park and the southwest portion of Yellowstone National Park. Having flown in and out of Salt Lake City, he will also discuss a few stops they made to and from the parks. Lots of fantastic scenery and great hikes. (The trip was originally planned for June 2020, but unfortunately the pandemic intervened.)

Staff Corner

April was one of our busiest months as we are in the midst of the Spring Semester, hosting many great special events, and our clubs are active. A highlight this month was meeting a group of new members over coffee. We met members who have joined over the past six months and discovered some were longtime Arlingtonians recently retired and others recently moved here. Several signed up for clubs or volunteered after the event. It’s wonderful to meet new people excited about Encore Learning and getting them more involved.

You read it above, but we will restate that it is so important to complete your course evaluations. Please take less than three minutes of your time to give the instructor and us your feedback. We take the response rate very seriously and its important to hear from each of you. Find the link to the survey on your class webpage.

I hope to see many of you at our Annual Meeting on May 21st. It’s hard to believe it’s been 7 years since we last held this meeting in person! Please remember to vote by 9:00 AM on May 20th.

April is also National Volunteer Month and its a great time to say thank you! We appreciate each of you who create, host, teach, aide, promote, edit, analyze, greet, inform, and lead in so many ways. You have many talents and we are glad you share them with us. We would not be standing strong with 1250 members without your ongoing support and leadership.
